Look out at the world.
It is dark perpetually.
Maybe that’s why evangelicals say humanity is depraved,
because it is dark out there.
Too dark it seems for light to exist,
but in the darkness, borne of pain and wandering,
souls will rise,
as it happened in the beginning of time –
a spirit hovering over chaos.
The souls will shape the chaos and give it new meaning,
organizing,
cleaning,
restoring,
separating,
ordering.
These souls will hear and see light into existence,
where absurdity otherwise reigns.
All will be made well for a generation.
All will be made well
for those who have ears to hear
the beat spirit sing of darkness
which has become like the sun at noonday.

(A tribute to Karen Dalton)
“She had the Beat spirit as well, the existential angst which felt life was dark, perpetually in pain, and that was how you became your art, if you were a real artist.” – Lenny Kaye
“If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.”
Isaiah 58:10 ESV
